NEW COACH - TROY WATSON

This week we welcome our new coach to the BTS team. Troy Watson has come on board to replace Bronny and will be on pool deck tonight.

Troy is married with a young son and had recently moved back to Australia after 3 years working in Abu Dhabi. There he was the Venue Operations Manager at the Yas Marina Circuit which hosts the Formula One Grand Prix. Prior to that he was 8 years as a Commissioned Officer in Royal Australian Navy serving all over the World.

Additionally Troy was heavily involved in coaching triathletes in Abu Dhabi and also brings a lot of personal experience as an athlete. He has competed in numerous IM events all over the World and in 2009 qualified and competed in the IM World Championships in Hawaii.

Troy will be coaching the Tuesday and Thursday night swim sessions but will also be involved in other parts of the program including beginner courses and bike/run session. We're excited to have Troy on board and look forward to the expertise he can provide as one our new coaches.

TRAINING

With over 50 people at running this morning we're definitely back into the swing of things at training. In hot conditions like this morning and with a hard swim ahead tonight please ensure that hydration is a priority today to help prevent cramping in the pool.

Sweat loss will be quite prominent and the humidity also makes it harder to recover. Keep drinking and eating well through day and you'll have a much better session in the pool as a result.

The normal full program has also resumed this week starting with the double Tuesday night swim session tonight. Matt Hopper will be taking the 100%ers tomorrow morning from UQ at 5.15am while Ray has the novice level cyclists from 5.30am also at UQ.

The remainder of the squad are doing some strength work at Mt. Cootha from 5.20am meeting at JC Slaughter Falls Car Park.

This Saturday morning is our first combined session with the Gold Coast Tri Squad. We ran a couple of these sessions last year at Main Beach Southport and they proved to be quite popular. A mixture of beach running, sand hills and ins & outs in the surf they're a great fun session. Session starts at 6am from the Southport SLSC at Main Beach.

Then on Sunday is club champs at Robina. Can we beat Red Dog after they took the title last year? They certainly are keen to win again and will be very hard to beat with a lot of quality athletes in their squad.

Surfers Paradise Tri Club are keen to be number one especially now that is on the Coast while Victoria Point Sharks and Southbank Tri Club both have a growing member base and will have big numbers racing.

What ever happens it will be a great day's racing. It's great to see more clubs/squads getting behind the concept. Let's race hard to give BTS the best chance of getting the title back we won 2 years ago.

RACE FUEL, FLUID & HYDRATION ANALYSIS

Our expert Sports Dietitian Sally Garrad is offering an extensive race fuel, fluid and hydration analysis to improve performance. This is a great chance to work out exactly what your body requires for racing in terms of fuel and fluids.

This sports nutrition training session is all about finding out what your unique requirements are for maximising your race performance!

The “Race Fuel, Fluid & Hydration Analysis” will be conducted over a 1 hour performance simulation/training session. Prior to the session you will be asked to fill in a brief questionnaire about your current nutrition/hydration practices and you will be asked to replicate your race nutrition practices during the race simulation.

Hydration status is determined by urinalysis on the day, so you will be asked to bring along your sample.

Your sweat rate, nutrition and fluid intake rates, and your sweat electrolyte concentrations will be measured. The latter is done via sweat patch testing – your patches are sent to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra for analysis.

Sweat patch testing allows you to see the composition your sweat – determining if you have high, low or ‘interesting’ electrolyte requirements! If cramping has been an issue in the past, this session is for you!

Once your results are returned from the AIS, they are combined with your sweat rate & nutrition practices to provide you with a detailed analysis of your hydration status, fluid losses, fluid requirements, sweat electrolyte composition, and race fluid/nutrition guidance based on the information collected.

The cost is $220 and if you're interested please e-mail me on mark@brisbanetrisquad.com.au From there we'll arrange a training session for Sally to come along to and complete the testing.

BEGINNER COURSE

Our next beginner course starts next week on the 17th. If you know anyone keen to get into the sport let them know about our courses. Most of the participants from our latest course are racing this weekend at Robina.

We really enjoy seeing new people complete their first race and then go onto bigger and better things. All details are at http://www.brisbanetrisquad.com.au/BeginnerCourses.php

MOOLOOLABA CAMP

We need final numbers for the Mooloolaba training camp by the end of this week so we can finalise the accommodation requirements.

You don't have to be a member of BTS to attend the camp and all abilities are catered for. Please contact suz@brisbanetrisquad.com.au to secure your place. Details of the camp are at http://www.brisbanetrisquad.com.au/Camps.php
