We have some new BTS life members to acknowledge this month firstly with some ladies who did our very first ladies only beginner course back in August 2008.
It has been great to see these ladies kick on to bigger and better things. On that course and still with us are Alicia Newman, Shelly Marriott, Merinda Eckart and Nic Savage. All of these ladies have been great supporters of BTS and still going strong.
Our other new life member is Simon Prebble. Simon juggles the demands of a father, husband and a high pressure job with travel really well and is still setting run pb’s at 43 on limited training.
We will present Alicia, Shelly, Merinda and Simon their shirts at the Noosa after party along with another few people who will qualify in the next couple of months.
Remember the qualification for BTS life membership is to have trained consistently with the squad for 3 straight years. Once a life member they receive free annual membership, monthly training fees reduced to $90 and their own BTS life member shirt.
GOOD LUCK
Good luck to Paul Thistleton who travels to China this weekend to compete in the World Championships in Beijing on September 10th. This is Paul’s second Australian representation and after a good lead up he should race well.
SPEEDY RECOVERY
Unfortunately Darrell Giles had a heavy fall on his bike last week and will be laid up for a while. Darrell suffered a broken arm , dislocated elbow and numerous cuts and bruises so will be out of action for some time.
We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back and getting ready for his first IM next year.
WELL DONE
Congratulations to Rich Fairhead who finished his third IM last weekend at IM Canada. Rich has always wanted to compete in his native race and to do so in front of his family was a great thrill for him.
UNIFORMS
We will have the sample one piece tri suits from Scody at training until the end of the week for people to try on. If you would like to order one, please e-mail suz@brisbanetrisquad.com.au. The cost for the suits will be $185 and we need to place the order by next week to ensure they are ready for Noosa.
If there is enough demand we will also order some more 2 piece tri suits. On each of the one and two piece suits there is a minimum order so if you do want either please let us know. The two piece are the current ones from Captivations which are great for the longer events.
TRAINING
TRAINING
Spring is here so it is time to ramp up the training. The major events are not too far away and the cold winter days are behind us. It also indicates the time to move away from the hills and start doing some harder speed intervals on the flat.
The strength work gives you the power and fitness to better handle the quality efforts on the flat. Triathlon is all about the bodies ability to perform the same movement over and over whilst under physical duress.
Through a combination of strength/endurance training and then quality intervals, you train your body to better to perform those movements. As always recovery is crucial but the better your recovery is the more consistent and beneficial the training is.
At this stage we also start to break up groups at training depending on the event they are working towards. Those aiming for longer distance events will perform different sets at the run and some ride sessions.
The other area of training that is sometimes neglected is the mental approach. Triathlon is a sport where what happens between your ears has a massive impact on the final result. A positive, motivated and balanced approach to training and racing will often mean a great result.
Conversely a negative and stressed approach to training becomes like a cancer in your head. This can often mean someone who has had a great physical preparation will not achieve the result they desire due to the negative energy created by these negative thoughts.
As coaches our job is to provide inspiration at training through positive feedback and an enjoyable training environment. Your fellow athletes can also provide inspiration through their training performance and how hard they might work. Additionally if it is fun to come to training it makes it easier to get out of bed early in the morning.
But for the athlete, tthe motivation must come from within. The desire and the want to do the work must come from the athlete and not the coach. You can’t motivate the unmotivated.
What does help with your motivation though, are positive thoughts. The endorphins you get from a great training session, the benefits you get from feeling fit and the rush of achieving the result you want at a race.
These all start with positive thoughts about yourself, your training and your racing. A positive thought is as simple as saying, “ I am a good athlete and love training.” Say it often enough and you will to believe it.
So as we head into the racing season start working on your mental training. It will make a massive difference to your training and racing.
