PILATES
In partnership with Performance Podiatry and Physiotherapy in West End we will be incorporating a Pilates session into the BTS training calendar. The session will be held on Wednesday evenings from the Valley Pool starting at 6pm. As with Monday night core sessions, entry into the pool is $2. Training fees are as per usual with BTS members $10 casual or standard monthly fees.
Our favourite Australian Champion and resident physio at Performance Podiatry and Physiotherapy, Alissa Williams will be coaching these sessions.
A few items will be needed to attend the class; Pilates mat, towel and a 1 metre length of theraband (there are different colours depending on the level that you are at). We will have both the mats and therabands available for purchase at the session. If you have a specific injury or would like more of a challenge there are more individualised Pilates sessions run out of the clinic in West End. This is a great opportunity to reap the benefits of a strength routine and ultimately make you leaner, stronger, faster and more competitive triathletes.
Benefits of Pilates
Many people may have heard on the grapevine that there are huge benefits by integrating a Pilates session or two into your weekly routine. Below are some of the reasons that Pilates is becoming an integral part of any training regime.
Pilates is an exercise program developed in the 1920's which has evolved into over 500 exercises focuses on flexibility, balance, body awareness and core strength. Incorporating things such as theraband, fitballs and pilates reformers help to modify the exercises to cater for all levels and abilities.
The majority of the exercises focus on having a stable core (abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks) whilst moving your extremities to challenge the strength of these muscles. Some of the benefits are listed below
• Tones and builds lean muscle without creating bulk
• Focuses on those deep abdominal muscles that support the core and lower back.
• Training efficient patterns of movement
• Restore postural alignment
o In conventional strength workouts the weak muscles will tend to get weaker, whilst the strong muscles with tend to get stronger, which leads to muscle imbalance, changes in biomechanics and decreases movement efficiency. Due to the specificity and control of Pilates it helps to retrain the whole body, not just the strong muscles.
• Assists in preventing injuries and in turn helping to optimise performance by decreasing training days lost due to injury.
BTS JACKETS
To help ward off those winter chills we will be placing the order for the BTS jackets tomorrow. We have received the samples and the sizing is fairly standard for those who have ordered one. The jackets are expected to be delivered in the next 2 weeks.
