The Labour Day weekend was an opportunity for BTS athletes to choose between a number of different events. We had 15 athletes competing at IM Aus and the 70.3 race, the final race of the Gatorade series, the Luke Harrop triathlon and Battle of the Borders cycling event at Kingscliffe.
As a coach my only regret is I wasn't able to be at all the events to watch the different squad members compete. However the digital World we live means results come in so quickly it is almost like you are there.
At IM Australia we had 8 athletes toe the start line of the new IM Aus course at Port Macquarie. Whilst the rain stopped the wind didn't and made for some of the toughest bike conditions many athletes have had to contend with.
The design of the new 2 lap bike course meant that the athletes had to contend with a head and cross wind for the majority of the ride. Despite this we had 8 athletes start and 8 finish with a smile on their face so it was a good day.
Dave Doyle: First IM and had a great day pacing himself to perfection to finish in 10.45. Moved the field very well on the run.
Tim Osborne: IM number 4 for Tim and another consistent day for a 10.58 just outside his PB of 10.50 despite breaking a spoke during the ride.
Mark Gleeson: Just missed breaking the 11hr barrier with a 11.01 but had a great bike of 5.36. His third IM with the last one over 10 years ago.
Paul Scroggie: Would have broken 11hrs were it not for 2 flat tyres. Looked great in the run and loved every minute of his first IM to finish in 11.12.
Blair Venn: Has come so far in the last 2 years losing 10kg and posting new pb's every time he does a race or time trial. His first IM also and looked strong all day with a 11.33.
Tim Franklin: Backing up for his second IM but 2 flat tyres and drafting penatly slowed his progress on a tough day. Battled through the run despite having some nutritional problems and finished in 11.44.
Rich Fairhead: His second IM and new pb of 12.44 for the maple leaf man. Now backing up for a third when he heads home to compete in IM Canada in August.
Krista Page: Our newest member of the IM group Krista had a great day to finish her first IM on 14.03 and never missed a beat all day.
We also had some athletes competing in the 70.3 with Belinda Daniels, Kristen Walker, Bess Brownjohn, Ed Connelly and Yas Grigaluinas completing their first half IM events. Yas had a great day to finish 4th in the ladies 35-39 in 5.25 while Andrew Callow showed he is on track for Cairns Challenge with a 5.01 and 10th in his age group.
At the Battle of the Borders cycling event Mark Pierce had a great weekend to place 3rd in general classification in elite C while Mike Hill won a stage in the same grade. Tom Manning and Tom Hogbin also competed for the first time and will no doubt be better for the experience.
And finally at Luke Harrop on the Gold Coast Chris Bierton wrapped up the 20-24 age group series with a second. Kristy Bell and Troy Grimshaw also finished well with 2nd and 4th to secure second in their age group for the series.
END OF SEASON AWARDS AND PARTY
There is a slight change of plans for the end of season awards and party. Due to the expected sell out at the races on May 28th we have booked some space at the track on the inside car park and will present the awards at the races. There will be no breakfast at the Pavillion.
We will be using the BTS tent and will have catering on site and our own area to watch all the races and have a great day. Cost for the tickets are $70 which includes entry to the races, food and booking of the space. We will present the awards there on the day.
Based on previous years we have made a booking to cover 50 people and we must receive all payments by no later than Mon May 23rd into the BTS bank account. We will not be able to take late bookings due to the hiring of the space and catering needs.
When you deposit the funds into the account please use your name as a reference so we can allocate a ticket.
Also don't forget to send in your vote for the coaches award. Many people have already sent in their votes which is great however it would be great if everyone submitted a vote to mark@brisbanetrisquad.com.au
TRAINING
With Byron Bay Tri and BRW this weekend it represents the last major races of the season except for Cairns Challenge on June 5th. So from next week as we do in other years we'll use the next few weeks to back off the intensity at training and go back into an easier block of training.
Group rides and runs at aerobic pace will be a regular thing however there will be some sessions such as the Fri morning wind trainer that will be higher intensity. It is still important to maintain some intensity in training year round but the for the next few weeks overall things will be easier.
The Tue, Wed and Thu morning run sessions also start from 5.45am while bike sessions will remain at 5.30am so please ensure you have lights that are working. Weekend sessions will vary depending on events such as the Noosa winter festival and bike camp but we will look at doing some trail runs again and long rides.
