Mooloolaba 2011 was the 4th time BTS has made a visit to compete and party along with the thousands of other triathletes from around Australia. Many of our members were doing their first Olympic Distance event while others were back again to improve on previous results.
The conditions were not conducive to pb's due to the strong winds on the bike but never the less many of our athletes recorded pb's while some were at the pointy of the end of field in their age group. Some of the highlights included a return to age group racing for our resident bike coach and sponsor Matt Hopper.
Matt won the overall age group title at Mooloolaba in 2000 before going on to race in the ITU World Cup Event as a professional on a few occasions. Matt showed his class to finish second in 2.03 while Dave Thomas was 5th in the same 30-34 age group in 2.08 who 12 months ago was a smoking his life away before starting triathlon.
In what was a very competitive age group Troy Grimshaw continues to improve with a 2.09 which was 10 min quicker than last year. In the 20-24 men's Chris Bierton, Tom Manning and Tom Hogbin all recorded top 10 placings with Chris now a chance to place top 3 in the Aus age group series.
Our quickest girl was Alissa Williams with a 2.17 and pb for second in the 20-24. After her 3rd at Geelong, Alissa now heads to Sydney to try and secure a podium spot in the age group series. Hannah Hogan went 2.20 this year which is almost 10 min quicker than last year and is also a chance to podium in her age group for the series.
Some big improvements from last year included Simon Corrie 2.54 down to 2.45, Ben Hargreaves 2.59 to 2.45, Ed Connolly 2.46 to 2.35, Andrew Callow 2.34 to 2.26 and Blair Venn 2.41 to 2.22. It was also great to see first timers such as Phillippa Smith, David Franks, Karen Wolski, Shelley Marriott, Kristie Rickman, Sophie Mooney, Sky Kendall and Damien McKluskie get through the race well and plan for future events.

MOOLOOLABA VIDEOPRO PRIZE
Thanks to our great sponsors at Videopro http://www.videopro.com.au/ we were able to give away another 50" 3D plasma TV and home theatre system worth $2500. Like previous campaigns you had to be a BTS member and competing at Mooloolaba.
Along the way we gave out bonus tickets to increase your chances so many people had more than one ticket in the draw. The winner though was Merinda Eckart when we did the draw at the BTS after race function at the Wharf Hotel.
Merinda has been a fantastic supporter of BTS since completing our first ladies only beginner course so it was great to see her come away with the prize.
WHAT'S NEXT?
These days the Triathlon season doesn't end until June. For some, now is a good time to have a break however we still have athletes competing in Sydney, Redcliffe State Champs, Luke Harrop, Battle of the Borders, Port Mac IM and Half, Byron Bay and then Cairns Challenge.
For those not racing a break is essential to recover from the past few months. A time to set some new goals, review your performances and sleep in. Maybe look at a few different events over the next few months. Bike racing, fun runs and ocean swim events are all available for the next few months so use the time to back off the training a little and enjoy something different.
A break should be at least 2 weeks but preferably 3-4 weeks before you start to do anything structured again. The training will start to vary slightly for those kicking on from Mooloolaba. Now it is about maintaining fitness for the rest of the season while others still building we'll up the intensity as required.
You will notice on the training calendar that swimming on a Wed and Thu nights is now back to one session only and from next Wed 13th Brad will be taking 3 weeks of bike sessions at Mt. Gravatt. These sessions will be speed focused and perfect for those kicking onto Luke Harrop and Byron Bay.
AVANTI PLUS THE VALLEY CYCLE CAMP
After the success of our inaugural cycle camp last year we'll be doing the same again this year on the Queens Birthday weekend from June 10-13. This year we'll be heading to Sunshine Beach and using the roads of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
Cost of the camp is $330 which includes 3 nights accommodation, dinner for 2 nights and drinks/snacks for all training sessions. Avanti Plus the Valley will also be giving away some prizes so if you would like to come please e-mail suz@brisbanetrisquad.com.au
TOUR DE TRI 24HR
Our annual 24 hr triathlon the Tour de Tri http://brisbanetrisquad.com.au/TourdeTri.php is back on again this year. We have changed the date to August 13/14 in the hope that with less events on and coming towards the end of winter more people will be keen to compete.
The 6hr event is also back with teams welcome in both the 6 and 24hr events. It is the only 24hr triathlon in the World and with the laid back atmosphere, camping and the challenge of doing triathlon for 24hrs we hope it will grow into a must do event for triathletes around Australia.
Entries are now available on line through http://www.qsmsports.com/extra.asp?id=269&OrgID=19 The team at QSM Sports have joined with us to help grow the event in years to come. They are doing a great job with events like the Kingscliffe Triathlon and Battle of the Borders so we're looking forward to working with them for this year's event.
