BTS Blog 4/1/11

WELCOME TO 2011

I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable break and welcome to 2011. Another year behind us and now is the time to look forward to the events of the next 12 months. The first week back and we're into our 12 week countdown to Mooloolaba.

The Mooloolaba Tri for many is the first major event of the year, whether it is their main race or a build up to ones after that. Like Noosa, it is now one of the two big multi sport events in Australia that everyone wants to compete in.

As per previous campaigns we'll follow a structured build up for the next 12 weeks. Our first 4 weeks will involve mainly strength work across the swim, bike and run. After that the emphasis will change with more intensity and speed to bring you up to a peak for the race.

Due to the fact the majority of people already have a big base from before XMAS there is not a great a need to do big miles, but rather some more specific intensity work. However there are some training for other events that will require more aerobic work and the sessions will cater accordingly.

Prior to Noosa I wrote an article on how to use a squad program. This was for those attending squad sessions and how to balance your own individual needs with what squad training provides. I would recommend using that program again as a guide as it is under
http://www.brisbanetrisquad.com.au/downloads/articles/How%20to%20use%20squad%20program.pdf

The main thing to take away from that is go easy on your easy days so you can go hard on your hard days. It takes discipline to ensure your recovery sessions are just that, recovery and you don't do them too hard. Easy sessions that are done too hard mean you can't go hard when you need to.

As always check the training calendar for session details and location. We'll continue to use facebook and twitter on a regular basis for any of the latest news and events. We're really looking forward to the next few months and working with everyone to achieve their goals.

RABY BAY

The final race of the season was held at Raby Bay on Dec 12th. It was great to see so many people out there supporting and getting behind BTS in the club champs. USM should be congratulated for trying to promote the clubs and squads with this format. Hopefully in time Triathlon Queensland and more clubs will get behind it to make it a great event.

Unfortunately we were not able to defend our title from last year and finished second to Red Dog. We'll be back next year to have another crack at our neighbours from the Valley Pool. Perhaps we should look at a couple of other events during the year to promote some friendly inter squad rivalry.

The next QTS event is at Robina on Jan 16th over 750/20/5. Following that there are a number of events especially through February to choose from. There is also a reasonable size crew heading to Hell of the West on Jan 30th so the racing continues early in the new year.

PERFORMANCE PODIATRY UPDATE

Performance Podiatry & Physiotherapy is proud to announce that remedial massage therapist Matt Lyne will be joining the practice from Monday December 13. Matt is the preferred massage therapist for BTS.

His addition to Performance Podiatry & Physiotherapy in West End will mean that BTS athletes have a one stop shop for all their sports medicine needs. Having each discipline in the one clinic improves patient outcomes as the guys are able to communicate patient needs much more easily.

Matt will initially be seeing patients at the West End clinic on Mondays from 8:30am – 1:30pm. Health rebates are paid on the spot so you only need to pay the gap. All bookings can be done directly through the clinic on 3846 4800.

Also, look out for Pilates coming to Performance Podiatry & Physiotherapy in 2011. Some of the benefits of Pilates include:

 Improved posture & body awareness
 Increased core stability & strength
 Decreased pain, tension & stress
 Injury prevention
 Increased circulation & flexibility
 Longer & leaner muscles
 Improved neuro-muscular coordination
 Increased function and energy
 Enhanced athletic performance

No doubt you’ll hear more about the Pilates classes at Performance Podiatry & Physiotherapy over the coming weeks. The guys are looking to put together a great deal for BTS athletes which will be specifically focused not only on the needs of triathletes but also your individual requirements.

BTS XMAS OLYMPICS

In one of modern sports worst streaks, the Kiwis have won the BTS Olympics for the 4th year in a row. In the end it did not come down to athletic ability as the last event was the 4 person relay involving one person eating a cold meat pie, another eating a dry weet bix, another drinking a hot beer and the other eating a dry fluffy white bread roll before doing a short ocean swim and passing onto the next person.

At the start of this event all teams were equal but the Kiwis showed they have talent where it matters and won the event. With other events such as piggy back relay, tug of war, beach flags on top of the swim carnival the bros from across the ditch were too good.

On top of losing to Red Dog in the club champs, to see the Kiwis win the Olympics again, well let's say it has been a rough couple of weeks. And I have a funny rash all over me from wearing the Red Dog shirt at training! All in good fun though!

WEDDINGS, PARTIES, ANYTHING

Congratulations to Matt from Avanti Plus with his recent wedding to his lovely wife Mel. Another heading down the same track in the future is Carmen Low after her recent engagment to partner Rob.

From everyone at BTS congratulations and we wish them all the best for the future.

GOODBYE 2010

We all say it so much but the past year has gone by so quickly. It really is true that life will pass you by unless you make the most of it. I would like to think we have the philosophy at BTS and make the most of every opportunity presented.

In the past 12 months we have seen many members of the squad achieve some great things. Everything from completing their first triathlon, doing some massive pb's, completing an IM, qualifying to represent at World Champs and amongst it all enjoying the ride.

I'm sure the next 12 months will be just as exciting. Mooloolaba is now every bit as big as Noosa. So once we get back into training on Tue Jan 4th we have 12 weeks until race day so we'll hit the ground running.

There will be another beginner course, more QTS races, a Mooloolaba camp, IM New Zealand, IM Australia and the first Iron Distance race in Cairns to finish the season off in June. To be finishing the season in June says a lot about the sport and how many events people now have to choose from.

So enjoy the break over XMAS and New Year and get ready for a massive 2011. On behalf of the whole coaching team at BTS have a great XMAS, a massive New Year but above all a safe. Thanks for all your support in making BTS what it is and we look forward to seeing everyone on Jan 4th.

IM WA - BUSSELTON

The latest BTS IM campaign kicked off in Busselton, Western Australia last weekend with a small crew of BTS athletes competing. It was a great day for all concerned for different reasons. As a coach though it again allowed me to see the best in people as they strive to achieve their goals.

Being at an IM event is inspiring and then having the privilege of being there as a coach is even more inspiring especially when you see the athletes you coach go well. Being such a long day, like the athletes you experience so many different emotions. Excitement, fatigue, anxiety, concern, pain, satisfaction and happiness but after it's all over, relief.

The day started with mild temperatures and calm water so it was a good one for fast times. Being such a flat bike and run the hardest thing to deal with is the wind and the bike leg certainly had some strong headwinds on the way back into town. By the time they got onto the run the wind had died down a little but an IM marathon is hard regardless.

Unfortunately for Sarah Jones who was doing her second IM event, the bike leg presented many challenges outside of the wind. At about 70km into the bike her derailleur and chain snapped also causing a broken spoke in her back wheel. About 45 minutes later, the on course bike mechanics were able to repair it for her but it meant she was only able to ride in one gear for the remaining 110km of the ride.

Riding with the wind was okay but into the wind, it was a real grind and her comment after was, " glad I did all those Mt. Gravatt repeats every week." Only able to ride in one gear was challenging for a number of reasons but undeterred Sarah put it behind her, kept smiling and finished the race.

Obviously it affected her overall time (13.01) but more importantly she finished and never thought of stopping to show what IM is all about. A true IM athlete and for her next event she'll be so much better for the experience.

The other half of the Jones family, Brad was also backing up for his second IM after doing IM NZ earlier this year. Despite pulling some muscles in his lower back 2 weeks out Brad's prep was almost perfect. This showed on race day when he went 9.59 for a 57 min pb from NZ.

Brad did everything right on race day, so to see him dip under 10 hours for an IM event was fantastic. He is naturally a strong swimmer and with his bike and run really improving he'll continue to go faster in future events.

The final member of the crew racing was Suzanne McCarthy backing up for her 3rd IM. Her first IM event at Port Macquarie was marred by a crash on the bike but still finished in 12.52 and earlier this year she did 11.28 at IM NZ. On Sunday she had a great day to cross the line in 10.30 for 5th in her age group and 21st female overall including the pro's.

Over the last 4 years she has just been consistent with her training, set new goals, had regular breaks and enjoyed the journey along the way. Her bike is naturally strong but her swim and run have really improved and on Sunday she ran a 3.56 IM marathon which was 20 min quicker than her NZ IM marathon.

What I hope that shows people is that anyone can achieve some great results if they just keeping working hard and take a long term approach. The best results come after a few years of consistent training and racing which Suz now has. And with more of the same she'll continue to improve.

It was also great to see Paul Dodd go 8.45 (first time under 9hrs), place 10th overall and second age grouper. Paul is a regular at our Wed morning 100%ers bike session with Matty Hopper and the guys. They will testify to his ability on the bike and on his day Paul is the best age grouper in Australia across any distance.

MASSAGE

Our preferred massage provider for BTS, Matt Lyne has updated his details and prices. Matt has just completed a Diploma of Remedial Massage from the Q Academy. Due to this upgrade in qualifications, his prices are increasing slightly.

This new qualification now allows Matt to register for a health care provider number with many private health organisations so you will be able to claim his treatments against your private health fund. This should bring the price you pay per treatment back to relatively the same price you are paying now.

Matt is also changing the hours slightly increasing his afternoon and Saturday morning time slots. Appointments during the day can be arranged and he will endeavor to see you at Studio Rise, but due to the fact that he is also working at other clinics, you may need to be booked through these clinics. If this is the case the price will depend on what the particular clinic charges.

Matt's new time slots at Studio Rise are:
* Tuesday - 5pm, 6pm, 7pm
* Thursday - 5pm, 6pm, 7pm
* Saturday - 9am, 10am, 11am, 12 noon

His new prices are:
* 30min - $40.00
* 1hr - $65.00
* 1.5hr - $90.00

Don't forget about his 5 Massage Pack for $275. This is a discount of $10 per massage. This would be perfect for all of you training for the up coming iron man events. Consider massage as PART of your training, not as an optional extra.

Matt is still at Studio Rise 4-7 Byres St, Newstead. Please contact him by phone,
sms or email (details below) for more information or to arrange a booking.

MOOLOOLABA CAMP 2011

Our Mooloolaba training camp will be held from Fri Feb 11th to Sunday Feb 13th at the Tropicana Resort. This is the same location as our previous Mooloolaba camp earlier this year and is right on the run course.

I did mention last week it would be in January but due to school holidays it was cost prohibitive hence the decision to make it in Feb. Like our previous camps it will be a great weekend of training and laughs.

We only have limited spots so if you would like to come please pay a $50 deposit into the BTS bank account (details on the website) by Jan 16th. The cost of the camp is $290 which includes 2 nights accommodation, all training sessions, training foods and drinks, 2 lunches and dinner on the Sat night.

XMAS HOLIDAYS BREAK

Training will stop after the evening swim session on Thu Dec 23rd and recommence on Mon Jan 3rd with the core/box session.

On the subject of XMAS remember the BTS XMAS Olympics start this weekend with the swim carnival and then the beach Olympics the week after which precedes the XMAS party.

If you would like to be part of the Olympics please e-mail me and for the XMAS party the money needs to be paid into the BTS bank account prior to Wed the 16th of Dec so we can finalise catering.

BTS XMAS OLYMPICS

The 4th annual BTS XMAS Olympics is back on again this year. Unfortunately the Kiwi's seem to have a habit of winning every year and getting over the line against Australia and the Rest of the World teams.

Like last year we'll be having a swim carnival and a beach Olympics the following week. The swim carnival will be Sat the 11th at the Valley Pool and at Suttons Beach the following week, the beach Olympics to decided the winning team.

This is always a great way to finish the year so if you would like to compete please e-mail me no later than next Thu (9th) so we can start to collate the teams. As per other years the beach Olympics will be made of different events including beach flags, tug of war & the pie eating Iron Man and Iron Woman,

With BTS made up of so many Kiwi's and internationals, national pride always comes to the fore.
Much like the under performing Australian cricket team the Aussies always seem to find a way to lose.

Perhaps this year they'll take home the trophy or will the Rest of the World led by "Magic Agyik" take it out. Surely the Kiwi's can't win again, I can't handle another year of bragging by our poorer Cousins!

BTS XMAS PARTY

Following the beach Olympics on Sat the 18th of Dec is the XMAS party. This year the theme is festive dress and the party will be held at the Toowong Bowls Club from 12.00pm with lunch at 1.00pm.

Cost is $40, payable by cash or into the BTS bank account. You don't need to RSVP but so we can get catering numbers right please pay by no later than the 16th of December. Payment on the day is quite difficult hence the need to pay by the 16th.

The cost includes buffet lunch, platters, bowls and your first drink. We'll also look at a short bowls tournament.

After the XMAS beach Olympics it should be a great day and hopefully we'll also get the chance to celebrate defending the Qld club champions trophy at Raby Bay from the week before. After winning last year it was great to go to Hog's breath cafe and spend the $1500 first prize.

MOOLOOLABA CAMP 2011

Put down in your diary the weekend of Fri Jan 21st to Sun 23rd of January as the annual Mooloolaba camp. Next week we'll release full details of cost and where we're staying. As per other camps it will be a great weekend of training and laughs.

IM WA - BUSSO

This weekend we have Suzanne McCarthy and Brad & Sarah Jones competing in IM WA. They have had a good prep so hopefully everything will come together on race day. Suz is doing her 3rd IM while Brad and Sarah are lining up for their second attempt at the IM event.

Good luck from everyone at BTS and you can follow their progress on Sunday on http://ironman.com
